Frida Kahlo – The Black Gull Amidst the Corpses
by Thanos Chatzopoulos
The play Frida Kahlo – The Black Gull Amidst the Corpses by Thanos Chatzopoulos, who also directs the production, comes to life on the Main Stage of Epi Kolono, featuring Danae Papoutsi in the role of Frida Kahlo, for a limited number of performances.
Drawing on elements of Documento theatre (personal letters, testimonies, diary entries), the 20th-century feminist icon offers a personal confession as she searches for peace in the final moments of her life.
From contracting polio at the age of six, to surviving the life-altering accident at eighteen that would torment her until her death, to her tempestuous love affair and historic marriage with Diego Rivera, her bisexual relationships, and her profound, all-consuming passion for art — these defining aspects of Frida’s turbulent and brief life are brought vividly to the stage at Epi Kolono, through the uncompromising voice of the iconic Mexican painter.

I was born a bitch, I was born a painter, I was born a mess.
